Sundowners on ‘AIR’
Well, if it was thrills and spills on Wednesday, I think Friday was shock and awe. Three enthusiastic boats took to the water in beautiful sunshine and 20 knots of
breeze, a perfect evening for sailing. Keith with his able assistants gave us a great coarse around perches, red marks, green marks and super yachts! Beats, reaches, runs in abundance. Started adjacent to Cage, beat to Perch, run to No.8, close hauled to round the magnificent super-yacht ‘AIR’ (http://afloat.ie/port-news/cruise-liners/item/18629-super-yacht-air-sails-into-cork-harbour) who I think thought we were go to come aboard, there were a few anxious face pressed against her plate glass windows and a crew member ready to fend off astern! then a screecher downwind to No.7 and back to Cage. …
RCYC Sailor Douglas Elmes wins 2012 Optimist Trials
RCYC Sailors had huge success after six days racing held in varied conditions over two weekends.
Douglas Elmes emerged as an early leader in the first leg of the trials at the National Yacht club Dunlaoighre. He was closely followed by his fellow club members Sophie Browne, Harry Durcan, Jil Mc Ginley , Harry Whitaker and Peter Mc Cann.
The second leg was held last weekend in Waterford Harbour sailing club. Although Douglas Elmes soon became the overall leader , the other four spots for the top five positions and thus a place in the team to represent Ireland at the Optimist worlds in Dominican Republic came down to a nail biting finish on the last day.
RCYC won out in the end with four of the top five places going to RCYC …
O’Leary and Burrows finish Star Class World Championships in fourth position
A third place finish today for Michael Hestbaek and Claus Olesen from Denmark, and a fourteenth placing for the Irish sailors, turned the result on its head and denied O’Leary and Burrows the bronze medal. Another turn up for the books was when Robert Scheidt and Bruno Prada went match racing with Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson. Even though Percy got the best of the duel, nonetheless he was sailed down the fleet to finish thirty eighth to Brazil’s thirty nine. When both these results were discarded it was the Brazilians who were seen to sail home flying their national flag and with it the Star World Championship. The British crew finished in second place
For the Irish pairing who …
More Thrills than Spills
National 18′s Wednesday Night 9/5/12
Another night of thrills and spills in the National 18ft class. 8 boats took to the water for two exciting windward / leeward races provided by Kieth McKeown, held in among the valuable yachts of the Crosshaven estuary. An easterly 20 gusting 25 knots made it interesting to say the least.
The first casualty was Breakeven 329. Willie with his all girl crew battled the elements bravely but eventually succumbed to the cold.
Race 1 was won by Happy Days with Colin getting clear air at the start and never looking back. He was followed by Cellulite and Clea
Race 2 and Happy Days never looked troubled unlike Oystercatcher whose middle man [Das boot skipper …
