The Grand Finale and Farewell

After all the excitement, nerves, incidents and tensions of Thursday the final day of Cork week today (Fri) turned out to be a somewhat calmer affair but with everybody on high alert knowing that where points were close today was to be  the showdown at the OK corale for the trophies and prizes.

With 18 to 20 knots of a west/south west wind with wind over tide it was a certainty that racing was going to be exciting and challenging on the penultimate day of the Cork Week racing schedule and like the last supper the best wine was being kept for the last.

Sunlight and Shadow and Hills and Dales on Day 3 of Cork Week Racing

The action was fast and furious during Races 5 and 6 at todays racing.  15-18 knots of  a southerly breeze with wind over tide created a huge swell and the resultant descent into troughs cannot have done any good for the stomachs of the competitors.

Change of weather conditions for racing today

Today marked quite a change in conditions from Monday.  However, the high winds forecast to arrive didn’t materialise and racing took place in all classes in force 4 to 5 knots occasionally 7 to 8 in a southwesterly breeze.  Your scribe was today watching the “biggies” in SZ and One. Fortunes ebbed and flowed and one is getting a sense of a pattern emerging in all classes.

Champagne Sailing on the Crosshaven Riviera today

What we had all hoped would happen came to pass today on the first day of racing at Cork Week. The competitors and Race Officers were blessed with warm easterlies of some 10 to 15 knots and the sun shone on a sparkling sea.

Cork Week 2010 officially opened

Cork Week 2010 was officially opened  tonight (Sun) by Foreign Affairs Minister Micheál Martin T.D. following a reception in the Fastnet Bar attended by local  dignataries and invited guests.  Minister Martin spoke in glowing terms of the favourable effect Cork week has on the local economy and tourist scene in the area in general and wished the event well for the week.
