Monaco Yacht Club was home to twelve international optimist dinghy teams last weekend, with both the Royal Cork and Ireland being well represented by four of our optimist sailors. The three day event was formally opened last Friday when HSH Princess Charlene of Monaco made a special visit to the yacht club to encourage all the teams on the opening day. Racing commenced soon after in light airs where the format was round robin to ensure that each team raced against all other teams. Sophie Browne Silver Medalist at Optimist Worlds in New Zealand
Club member, Sophie Browne, has just won a Silver Medal at the Optimist World Championship in Napier, New Zealand. Sophie was 13th overall and was only beaten by the overall World Champion, Kimberly Lin of Singapore. This was no flash in the pan. Sophie had a marvellous season finishing 4th overall (and first girl) at in Palma before Christmas in a fleet of almost 400 boats; winning the Irish Trials; 2nd overall and first girl at the National Championships; 1st Girl and 7th overall (out of 450) at the French Open Championships and won two of the four regional championships to finish as top ranked sailor in Ireland. Donagh Good and Kirsti O’Flynn will be taking the following for coaching on Sunday: The cost is €10 per sailor per day. Please pay at the start of the day. Remember because the sessions are short it is essential that sailors are rigged and ready to sail on time.
RCYC Sailors Take top 3 places at the Optimist End of Seasons
The Optimist End of Seasons regatta was won comfortably by Douglas Elmes in llaloe this weekend. Ronan Cournane was 2nd overall and top Junior while Adam d’Arcy had his best result in a national event coming 3rd overall. James Spillane (also RCYC) won the regatta fleet in fine style.

Optimist Cobbler League Starts on Sunday 2nd October
The Notice of Race for the Cobbler League has been published and is available here. Please print and complete this entry form prior to registration on Sunday at 10am. Entries are expected from all over Munster for this annual regatta which regularly attracts an entry in excess of 60 boats. Racing will be provided for both Main and Regatta fleets and particular note should be made of the entry eligibility requirements. Please also note that the races will be of a length similar to an IODAI regional event and that there will generally be 3 races per day with a maximum of 4 on any one day.
