O’Leary and Burrows finish Star Class World Championships in fourth position

A third place finish today for Michael Hestbaek and Claus Olesen from Denmark, and a fourteenth placing for the Irish sailors, turned the result on its head and denied O’Leary and Burrows the bronze medal.  Another turn up for the books was when Robert Scheidt and Bruno Prada went match racing with Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson.  Even though Percy got the best of the duel, nonetheless he was sailed down the fleet to finish thirty eighth to Brazil’s thirty nine.  When both these results were discarded it was the Brazilians who were seen to sail home flying their national flag and with it the Star World Championship. The British crew finished in second place

O’Leary and Burrows maintain their third position but need a good result tomorrow (Fri) to be on the Podium

Score sheet after five races

At the International Star Class World Championships today and with discard applied, Britian’s Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson are leading on 15 points having discarded their 17th place result today.   Robert Scheidt and Bruno Prada of Brazil are lying second on 20 points and the Irish duo of O’Leary and Burrows third on 26 points having provisionally discarded their 18th place result today.

Given the strength of the competition, any one of these world class top eight competitors could be on the Podium tomorrow but certainly the top five are looking very strong.

To summarise, it was a day of ups and downs with Scheidt scoring a 5th while Percy came 17th. This 5 points gap does not guarantee the …
